If your child is taking part in the research

We are trying to understand the experiences of 10 – 17 year olds living in Wales who has used unscheduled emergency asthma care e.g., 999 or 111 calls, unscheduled GP appointments and emergency department visits for sudden severe asthma attacks. We would like to invite your child to participate in our research.
Your child can participate by joining a WatsApp/telephone conversation (interview) for 30 to 45 minutes. And they will receive a £25 Thank You voucher for their time and support. In the WatsApp/telephone conversation , your child will be asked to share their experience of visiting the Emergency Department for an acute asthma attack. We would like to let you know that:
- Your child will be asked for their permission (assent) to take part in the focus group
- Your child’s participation in this research is voluntary. They do not have to say ‘yes’.
- If you decide for your child to take part, please note that everything will be private (confidential) and no one will be able to identify your child by their name (anonymous).
- The only time we will tell someone about it is if we were worried about your child’s safety.
- Even if your child take part, you both can change your mind anytime without giving a reason and this will not be a problem at all.

If you are taking part in the research
Thank you for visiting this website, We would like to invite you to take part in our research.
You can participate by joining a one-on-one WhatsApp/telephone interview for 30 to 45 minutes. You will receive a £25 Thank You voucher for your time and support. The interview would be conducted by a friendly researcher.
In this interview, you will be asked to share your experience as a parent/guardian/carer of a young person living with asthma who has used emergency unscheduled asthma care (111 calls, unscheduled GP appointments, emergency department visits) for a sudden severe asthma attack. The interview will be audio-recorded with your consent. Any information you give us will be audio-recorded and stored in a locked file (confidential). Only people from the immediate research team with an electronic key can access the locked file. You can stop participating in the group discussion any time you wish, without giving a reason and that will not be a problem. If you wish to participate, please fill this form.

About the WatsApp/telephone Interviews

Q. Where will this interview take place?
Ans. This interview can be conducted either via WatsApp chat or over the telephone.
Q. Will I need to take time off work and if so how much time?
Ans. You do not need to take time off work. You can take part in this interview at your convenience.
Q. Would it affect my child’s asthma treatment?
Ans. No, taking part in the interview will not affect your child’s asthma treatment. Whatever information you share with us in the interview will be kept confidential and your child’s healthcare provider or school staff would not know about it.
Q. What are the possible benefits of taking part in this research?
Ans. There are no immediate benefit of taking part in this research. However,with your support we can help empower young people living with asthma to manage their health conditions and navigate the system better.
Q. What are the possible risks of taking part in this research?
Ans. We are aware that sharing your experience as a parent/guardian/carer of a young person living with asthma who has used unscheduled emergency asthma care (111 calls, unscheduled GP appointments, emergency department visits) for a sudden severe asthma attack can cause you discomfort. If this occurs, please talk to the members of the research team. Alternatively, you can also check this list of useful contacts as well.
